In a remarkable start to Karachi’s digital traffic monitoring initiative, the city’s traffic authorities issued over Rs. 1.2 crore in fines within just a few hours of launching the new e-challan system[1]. The automated surveillance system flagged 2,662 violations, highlighting both the efficiency of the system and the widespread non-compliance among motorists.

The e-challan project is part of the Sindh government’s broader effort to digitize law enforcement and improve road safety through automation. The system uses AI-powered cameras to detect violations in real time, reducing manual intervention and corruption risks.

According to the Karachi Traffic Police report:

Type of Violation Number of Challans
Over-speeding 419
Lane violations 3
Stop-line breaches 4
Seatbelt not worn 1,535
Red light violations 166
Motorcyclists without helmets 507
Wrong-way driving 3
Tinted windows 7
Illegal parking 5
Mobile use while driving 32

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that,

“The new e-ticketing system ensures transparency and safety by recording violations automatically through surveillance cameras. It eliminates human bias and enhances service delivery.”

He also confirmed that the number of cameras will be increased to 12,000, with the system expanding gradually across Sindh.

The initiative aims to create a safer, more disciplined traffic environment in Karachi  a city known for chaotic road behavior. Experts believe the project, if sustained, could significantly reduce traffic accidents and fatalities in the long term.
