Inter Milan’s second-choice goalkeeper, Josep Martinez, was involved in a fatal road accident on Tuesday morning that led to the death of an 81-year-old man near the club’s training facility.
According to Italian news agency ANSA, the tragic incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. along Provincial Road 32 in Fenegrò (Como), when the Spanish goalkeeper’s vehicle struck the elderly man, who was travelling in an electric wheelchair. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene despite quick response efforts by emergency personnel.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident may have been caused when the elderly man suddenly changed direction while crossing the road, which might have left Martinez unable to avoid impact.
Reports confirmed that Martinez immediately stopped his car and offered assistance to the victim as police, ambulance, and helicopter services arrived at the scene.
The 26-year-old Spaniard, who joined Inter Milan earlier this year, has expressed deep regret over the incident and has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation.
Local authorities in Como have begun gathering evidence to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident, while Inter Milan are expected to release an official statement soon.
