Two suspects have been arrested over the seven-minute Louvre Museum robbery[1] which saw eight of France’s priceless crown jewels stolen.

One of the suspects was reportedly caught at Paris[2] Charles de Gaulle Airport in France while attempting to board flight following last week’s “highly organised” heist. According to local reports, the suspected robber was trying to get on a flight to Algeria.

The Louvre was forced into lockdown on Sunday after a group of thieves pulled off the brazen heist in broad daylight, making off with jewellery said to be worth £76 million. The gang, clad in high-vis vests, smashed through a window using power tools before fleeing on scooters, sparking a widespread manhunt.

President Emmanuel Macron[3] promised at the time that the thieves will be caught and the items they stole recovered.

News of the arrests comes after investigators revealed at least 150 DNA traces – including fingerprints – were left behind by the burglars before they escaped.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said on Friday that forensic teams were  analysing the samples in the hope of quickly identifying the four thieves behind the audacious heist. Beccuau said at the time she was “optimistic” the culprits would be found, adding if they have any previous convictions, their DNA should already be logged in police databases.
