The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development has taken serious notice of alleged financial irregularities involving a former Chairman of the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI).

According to the committee, an amount of approximately Rs2.4 million was allegedly drawn from workers’ welfare funds and used to obtain memberships at the DHA Golf Club, Karachi, and the Islamabad Club. The revelation came during a committee meeting chaired by Syed Rafiullah, which reviewed EOBI’s ongoing reforms and financial compliance.

Officials informed the committee that the case is currently under litigation. However, lawmakers expressed strong disapproval of the alleged misuse of employees’ savings, calling it a betrayal of trust. The committee directed EOBI to pursue the case on an urgent basis and ensure full recovery of the misappropriated funds.

Chairperson Syed Rafiullah stated that accountability must extend beyond documentation.

“Workers’ contributions are not for personal privilege. Every rupee taken unlawfully must be returned, and those responsible must face consequences,” he remarked.

The committee further instructed EOBI to submit a compliance report detailing progress on the recovery and to provide updates on internal reforms aimed at preventing future misuse of funds. Members also sought a five-year audit summary covering institutional spending, recoveries, and legal proceedings related to financial misconduct.

Additionally, a Sub-Committee was constituted to examine EOBI’s asset and investment portfolio, rental income streams, and property management practices to improve transparency and safeguard contributors’ money.
