Internet and cable operators in Lahore have accused the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO)[1] of cutting their cables without prior notice, disrupting services across several areas of the city. They have called on the Ministry of Energy and the Punjab government to take action against LESCO for interfering with their operations.

LESCO, however, has rejected the allegations, maintaining that internet and cable operators have been using its poles and right of way without permission or paying the required Rs50 per pole monthly fee. The company said these operators have created cable congestion, which has led to power interruptions and even fatal accidents.

According to a representative of a local cable operator, LESCO has recently intensified its campaign to remove internet and TV cables from poles in multiple areas, including Johar Town, Garden Town, Muslim Town, Iqbal Town, and Sabzazar. He said the move has affected business operations and angered customers, despite operators’ willingness to resolve the issue amicably.

LESCO Says Cable Removal Aims to Improve Lahore’s Appearance

LESCO officials stated that the initiative is part of efforts to improve Lahore’s appearance by removing hanging wires and overloaded poles. LESCO Manager (Safety) Fawad Khalid said operators often fail to remove old cables after relocating infrastructure underground, worsening the problem.

LESCO Chief Executive Officer Ramzan Butt said that cable operators have not paid dues for the past two decades despite earning millions in revenue. He cited incidents of electrocution caused by unsafe cable setups and urged operators to sign agreements, clear outstanding payments, and follow company safety guidelines.

He added that the cleanup drive was launched on government instructions to enhance city aesthetics and prevent accidents linked to tangled cables.
