Lionel Messi is close to agreeing a new contract with MLS side Inter Miami, according to reports and update from Fabrizio Romano.
The 38-year-old Argentine superstar is said to be discussing the final details of the deal, which would extend his stay in Miami.
Messi’s current contract, signed in summer 2023, is set to expire at the end of 2025, meaning he would become a free agent.
Messi Still Shining on the Pitch
Despite some concerns about his age and future — especially with teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets announcing plans to retire — Messi has proved he’s still in top form.
He finished the regular MLS season with a hat-trick against Nashville SC, bringing his total to 29 goals and 19 assists — an incredible 48 goal contributions in one season.
Contract Talks Going Well
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that both Messi and the club want to continue working together.
“Messi is expected to stay and sign a new deal… he is fully focused on the Inter Miami project,” Romano wrote.
The length of the new contract hasn’t been confirmed yet, but even keeping Messi for one more year would be a big win for the club — especially as the USA will co-host the 2026 World Cup, and Inter Miami are set to open their new Miami Freedom Park stadium that year.
Messi’s Future Beyond 2026?
It’s still not clear if Messi will play at the 2026 World Cup with Argentina, but this new contract suggests he may plan to stay active in football beyond 2026.
Fans will now wait for official confirmation of the new deal — but it looks like Messi’s MLS journey is far from over.
