Snapchat users in Pakistan and several other countries experienced major service interruptions on Monday due to a widespread outage linked to Amazon Web Services (AWS). Reports from Downdetector[1] showed issues across the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Australia, and multiple Pakistani cities, including Karachi and Lahore.
The outage left many unable to send messages, upload snaps, or even log into the app. In Pakistan, the most common complaints involved failed message delivery and non-responsive audio and video features, according to user-submitted data on Downdetector.
AWS Failure
The disruption has been traced to a failure in AWS’s US-East-1 region, which also impacted dozens of other major apps and services globally. Media outlets, including Reuters and The Guardian, confirmed that the AWS issue began around 12 PM Pakistan time and quickly spread through cloud-based infrastructure relied upon by apps like Snapchat.
In our testing at ProPakistani, Snapchat is slowly beginning to function again. While key features such as messaging and uploading were completely unresponsive earlier, some of these services are now gradually returning to normal. However, performance may still vary for users depending on location and device.
What Users Can Do
Pakistani users still experiencing problems are advised to try restarting the app, clearing cache, or switching to an alternate messaging platform temporarily. Official status updates from Snapchat or AWS may provide further clarity on when full service will be restored.
