The Punjab Communication and Works Department has kicked off groundwork for major infrastructure projects in Rawalpindi, including flyovers and underpasses at Kutchery Chowk and Jinnah Park, along with retaining walls near Fatima Jinnah Women University. These developments aim to ease traffic congestion and improve urban connectivity in one of Punjab’s busiest cities.

According to officials, the total cost of the projects is Rs. 6.6 billion, with Rs. 5.2 billion allocated for the Jinnah Park underpass and flyover, and Rs. 2.7 billion for the Iftikhar Janjua underpass. Although main construction will begin in early November after garrison authority clearance, the provincial highway department has already begun preliminary work, including service road construction and utility relocation.

A senior Punjab Highways official revealed that land acquisition is also underway four kanal and five marla for the Iftikhar Janjua underpass, eight kanal and two marla for Kutchery Chowk, and five kanal and 19 marla for the Jinnah Park project.

The city’s infrastructure expansion will continue with three additional underpasses planned at Race Course Park, Army Graveyard Square, and Chairing Cross on Peshawar Road, expected to start during the 2025–26 fiscal year, making the route from Ammar Chowk to the Motorway signal-free.

Executive Engineer Rana Qamar said,

“Work on retaining walls, service roads, and drainage systems at Jinnah Park and Fatima Jinnah University has already started. The main road construction will commence next month.”

These projects mark a significant step toward easing traffic bottlenecks and boosting the city’s long-term urban mobility.
