Danny Rohl has been appointed Rangers

Danny Rohl has been appointed as the new manager of Rangers[1], the club have confirmed.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss had publicly ruled himself out of the running for the job just days ago, when the Ibrox club looked set to appoint Kevin Muscat.

But negotiations over a deal with Muscat ultimately collapsed during their final stages, prompting Rangers to reignite their interest in Rohl.

The 36-year-old German has now been appointed as the club’s new manager, succeeding Russell Martin after the Englishman’s dismal spell in Glasgow.

He joins the Gers on an initial two-and-a-half-year deal, with his first match in charge coming on Thursday against SK Brann in the Europa League[2]

Rohl said: ‘It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of Head Coach at such an incredible club, recognised around the world. I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions, and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club.

‘We have no time to waste, we start straight away. I respect that trust is earned and understand we have to give the supporters confidence in what we are doing by showing it on the pitch from the start. The expectations are huge and I love this challenge because I set high standards for myself and the team too.

‘I’m looking forward to meeting the squad and getting down to work ahead of Thursday’s game away to Brann.’

Rohl steered Sheffield Wednesday away from relegation and finished 12th in his one full season in northern England.

He left Hillsborough in the summer by mutual agreement amid ongoing financial difficulties at the club.

Before taking charge at crisis-club Wednesday, which was his first job in management, Rohl held coaching positions at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Southampton, and was assistant boss under Hansi Flick at the Germany national team.

He succeeds Russell Martin, who was sacked after just 123 days in charge.

Rangers failed to qualify for the Champions League under Martin and lost both of their Europa League games. They sit sixth in the Scottish Premiership.
