The Punjab Environment Protection Department (EPD) has launched a strict crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles across the province as part of its broader anti-smog campaign. The drive, announced by Director General Dr. Imran Hamid Shaikh, aims to curb rising air pollution ahead of the smog season, with immediate instructions issued to traffic police for on-the-spot action against violators.
Dr. Shaikh emphasized that vehicles without fitness certificates or VICS clearance will not be permitted on roads, warning that traffic officials must ensure compliance. The campaign also mandates water spraying twice daily on roads and construction sites to reduce dust, while trucks carrying uncovered debris or soil will be seized.
He further cautioned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals involved in crop residue burning, a major contributor to seasonal smog. Dr. Shaikh urged agriculture teams to stay vigilant and ensure that dust and mud buildup on roads are promptly cleared.
Addressing public health concerns, he added that schoolchildren and parents must wear masks, directing the education department to enforce the rule strictly.
“All institutions must now move beyond lip service air pollution requires concrete steps,” Dr. Shaikh said, reaffirming Punjab’s commitment to sustainable environmental practices
