A major internet disruption on Monday temporarily knocked several high-profile apps and services offline, as Amazon Web Services (AWS) confirmed technical issues affecting its core infrastructure in the US-EAST-1 region.

The outage, which began around 12 pm Pakistan time, led to widespread service interruptions across apps such as Snapchat, Duolingo, Roblox, Canva, Ring, and Amazon’s own platforms, including Prime Video and Amazon.com. Downdetector recorded thousands of user complaints globally, with Snapchat alone accounting for over 5,000 reports.

AWS confirmed in a status update soon afterward that multiple services were experiencing “increased error rates and latencies,” and said engineers were actively working to mitigate the impact and investigate the underlying cause.

The company pointed to problems with key cloud services Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, which support critical storage and server functions for many websites and mobile applications. These issues quickly spread across platforms, which shows AWS’s central role in powering much of the global internet.

Apps Affected

The outage impacted a wide range of apps, platforms, and services, including both consumer and enterprise tools:

  • Amazon
  • Canva
  • Duolingo
  • Snapchat
  • Ring
  • Roblox
  • Life360
  • MyFitnessPal
  • Prime Video
  • Fortnite
  • Wordle
  • Coinbase
  • PlayStation
  • Vodafone
  • Pokémon Go
  • HMRC
  • Xero

AWS, which reported $108 billion in revenue last year, remains one of the most widely used cloud service providers in the world. Its technical failures often have far-reaching consequences, as seen during Monday’s outage.

As of the latest update, AWS engineers continue efforts to restore full service and determine the root cause. Users are advised to follow Downdetector for real-time updates on service recovery.
