I’ve already seen Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery[1] (lucky I know), and I can confirm it’s the best installment in the franchise yet. Not only is this great news for us, but it’s great news for Netflix[2].

We’re still two months away from the movie being released on streaming, but I’m predicting huge viewership figures and a public outcry for more. During a talk at the London Film Festival, director Rian Johnson said, “I don’t feel burnt out doing these at all. If anything, I feel energized after doing this one.”

“So as long as audiences want to keep seeing it, and Daniel and I are still having fun making them and still feel like we can come up with stuff that feels not just fresh, but a fresh challenge for us, I think that’ll translate to a new experience for the audience. For now, I’d be thrilled to keep making these for the rest of my life.”

As it stands, there’s no reason why Netflix wouldn’t want more of the popular and profitable Knives Out[3] films, even if two sequels were the original plan. If CEO Ted Sarandos happens to read this, I know exactly what we need from Knives Out 4.

The best Knives Out sequel after Wake Up Dead Man would be a Muppets whodunnit

Can you remember where you were when The Muppets Christmas Carol[4] was released? Of course you do. Is it the best film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ tale? Of course it is. I could rest my case there, but let’s dig deeper.

When there is an element of camp attached to an existing story, there’s nothing that couldn’t make it more lively, exciting, or just downright better with a cast of Muppets. In fact, the best human-Muppet ratio would be one human, and the rest Muppets.

Knives Out already becomes a contender for this format because Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is the franchise’s only returning character, but it goes further than that. Tell me you wouldn’t be wholly convinced by a love triangle between Blanc, Miss Piggy, and Kermit the Frog. Tell me you couldn’t imagine Statler and Waldorf laughing in Blanc’s face while he tries to solve the case.

Add a terrified Beaker running around in the background, and this movie writes itself. Streaming services like Disney+[5] are spearheading the Muppets renaissance (Muppets Now[6] is exclusively content for them, for example), while a Muppets movie remake remains a running joke on social media. We’ve all seen the Mamma Mia 3 tweets[7].

What I love the most about Wake Up Dead Man was how much I laughed, how naturally timely and funny the script is. Add Blanc, another tight script, and a Muppets cast together, and you’ve got dynamite.

If Netflix doesn’t make it happen for Knives Out 4, it’s over to Disney to make magic happen.
