The Tampa-based firmed was at the center of recovery following massive wildfires in California this year.

A Tampa-based insurance company was named among the best firms in the country by Forbes magazine.

The economic publication just released its America’s Best Insurance Companies[1] ranking for 2026 and Heritage Property And Casualty Insurance Co.[2] made that list. Heritage was rated the 28th best insurance firm[3] by Forbes.

The Forbes listing attributed Heritage’s financial strength and service as one of the reasons the company made the ranking.

Ernie Garateix, CEO of the company headquartered on the Gulf Coast, said the Heritage approach goes beyond simple insurance policies.

“At Heritage, our mission goes well beyond writing insurance policies. It’s about being there when our policyholders need us most,” Garatix said. “Being named one of America’s Best Insurance Companies is a reflection of the dedication and compassion of our employees across the organization. I’m incredibly proud of how our team stepped up to help families affected by the Palisade wildfires earlier this year and how they continue to deliver for our customers every day. Their commitment to service and community is what truly defines Heritage.”

Heritage was key to recovery efforts[4] following those blazes in Southern California in January. A team of Heritage personnel was dispatched to the areas of the Palisade wildfires where 16,000 homes were torched and destroyed. The company officials also joined a state of California Fire Insurance Workshop that featured assistance guidance and support for emergency needs and repairs for homeowners.

Heritage, a relatively new insurance carrier, was founded in 2012 and has about 275 employees. It also has corporate offices in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company labels itself as a “super-regional” insurance holding company and provides personal and commercial coverage in addition to property policies.

The company services coverage in U.S. regions including the  northeast, southeast, Hawaii and California and has subsidiaries. The company now accounts for writing about $1.4 billion in gross premiums and focuses on policies in catastrophe-prone areas with background in hurricane, wild fire, winter storm and other sever storm response.
