Meta has launched a new AI-powered feature for Facebook users in the US and Canada. The tool scans a user’s phone camera roll to find “hidden gems” buried among random screenshots and receipts. Once enabled, it uploads photos to Meta’s cloud and suggests edits or collages that users can save or share.

The feature, however, only works with media stored locally on your phone, not the photos or videos already posted to Facebook. Meta says it won’t use camera roll content to train its AI unless users choose to edit or share the AI-generated creations.

In response to questions, Meta clarified that uploaded photos are stored for processing but not used to improve AI unless users take additional actions. The company also stated that the uploaded media won’t be used for ad targeting.

Meta’s new tool comes after it admitted last year to training its AI on public Facebook and Instagram content dating back to 2007. The company says the latest feature will gradually roll out to Facebook users over the coming months.
