Four-time German Bundesliga champions Werder Bremen have announced plans to help Nigerian striker Victor Boniface return to his best physical condition.
The 24-year-old joined Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen on transfer deadline day after a proposed move to AC Milan collapsed due to medical concerns over his knee. Despite later clarifying that he had no medical problems, Boniface has struggled to find his rhythm since arriving at the Weser Stadium.
In four matches under coach Horst Steffen, the former Bodo/Glimt forward has yet to score but registered an assist in Werder’s 4–0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. Reports suggest that Boniface has gained some extra weight, which could be affecting his sharpness in front of goal.
During Werder’s 1–0 victory over St. Pauli before the international break, the 2024 Bundesliga Rookie of the Season had a late chance to net his first goal for the club but missed an opportunity he would usually convert with ease.
Speaking about the club’s plans, Werder Bremen’s sporting director Clemens Fritz said the team is fully committed to supporting Boniface’s return to peak form.
“We have clearly identified the areas we need to work on with Victor and are supporting him from all sides,” Fritz told BILD.
“This includes athletic training, physiotherapy and nutrition advice. He’s open to our guidance and eager to improve.
He works hard on the pitch and even puts in extra sessions on his days off.”
The former Werder defender added that Boniface has shown great discipline and determination to regain fitness and confidence.
Boniface, who was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Season last year after an impressive campaign with Leverkusen, will be hoping to rediscover his scoring touch as Werder Bremen continue their push up the league table.
