Six months after naming him to the Broward County School Board, Gov. Ron DeSantis is again tapping Becker & Poliakoff[1] shareholder Adam Cervera for an influential education-focused post.
Cervera is the newest member of the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA[2]) Board of Directors, which hears appeals, sets budgets, enacts policies and oversees statewide athletic competitions.
The appointment pends Senate confirmation.
Cervera told Florida Politics by text Friday, shortly after the Governor’s Office announced the appointment, that he is “honored” to take on the added responsibility.
“As someone who believes deeply in the power of sports to shape character and bring communities together,” he said, “I’m excited to help our student athletes reach their full potential, on and off the field.”
Cervera is also a member of the Florida Bar’s 11th Circuit Grievance Committee[3], where he previously served as Chair. He was a regional Board member for Read to a Child[4], a national volunteer mentorship program headquartered in Massachusetts.
Cervera has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Central Florida. He earned his Juris Doctor from the Florida International University College of Law. The FIU College of Law has also granted Cervera its Excellence in Service Award.
Prior to joining Becker in 2009, he worked for a year as a law clerk at the Miami-Dade County Public Defender’s Office.
The FHSAA Board is composed of 13 members, eight of whom are appointed by the Governor. Board members, except the Commissioner of Education or their appointee, serve three-year terms and may serve a maximum of six consecutive years.
The Board meets five times annually, often in Gainesville at the FHSAA headquarters. Its last meeting[5], and the first regularly scheduled meeting of the 2025-26 school year, was on Sept. 22, when members elected Okaloosa County Superintendent Marcus Chambers as their new President and Naples Head of School Paul Selvidio as Vice President.
