Charlie Sheen[1] has opened up about why he chose to go public about his past sexual relationships with men.

According to the actor, he felt it was finally the right time to share something he had kept private for so many years.

For now, Charlie Sheen remains single and has not dated in a long time. However, he is open to love again but has no intention of walking down the aisle after three failed marriages.

Speaking with The Times[2], the actor explained that “it just felt like the right time” to share such personal details about his life.

He went on to describe the anxiety and fear he used to feel about keeping this part of his life private, hinting at threats of extortion.

Sheen added, “I’ve experienced what it’s like to keep that stuff hidden, and always worry about the next phone call, the next knock on the door. But I didn’t have any experience with, ‘What if it was out there?'”

Looking back further on the experience, Sheen joked that his decision to come forward now places him among a long list of other famous figures who may have had similar experiences.

“It gave me something else in common with Richard Pryor and Marlon Brando,” the actor said. “That’s pretty good company, right?”

During his heyday, Sheen was often surrounded by women, many drawn to his fame as a Hollywood star.

He was married three times: first to Donna Peele, then to Denise Richards, with whom he shares two children, Sami and Lola, and later to Brooke Mueller, with whom he has twins, Bob and Max.

Now, despite being single and still considered an eligible bachelor by many, Sheen revealed that he hasn’t “dated for a long time” and explained why he has chosen to remain that way for the time being.

“I spent so much time and energy pursuing that for so long. It’s a pleasant break. I’m alone, but not lonely,” Sheen shared.

When he eventually decides to return to dating, it seems unlikely that the actor is looking for a fourth marriage.

“I am open to love again,” Sheen told People Magazine[3] in September while promoting his memoir “The Book Of Sheen.”

He continued, “If somebody walked through the door and it was the right time and you can’t deny it … absolutely. Probably not marriage, though.”

Now sober and living a much healthier lifestyle after years of battling alcohol and drug addiction, Sheen stands as proof that it’s possible to completely turn one’s life around.

Still, despite his determination to change and become better, the actor never thought he would make it to 60, a milestone he recently celebrated with gratitude.

“I have more days behind me than in front of me, and that’s fine,” he told People.

Interestingly, despite his wild past, Sheen hasn’t suffered any major health issues. He now makes a conscious effort to maintain his well-being through light workouts and healthier eating habits.

“I’m feeling pretty good! Most guys my age, they usually have a bad back or knees. Somehow I dodged that,” Sheen added at the time. “I just have a bad shoulder that I have to take Advil for.”

What seems to be left in completing Sheen’s cycle of change is the actor forgiving himself for his wild past. However, that has proven to be his biggest challenge yet, especially as certain parts of his past continue to haunt him.

“I still get what I call the ‘shame shivers.’ These are the moments that hit me, of the heinous memories and choices and consequences,” he revealed to the outlet.

Fortunately, much progress has been made over the years, thanks in part to the support of people urging him to forgive himself.

“They’re getting farther in between, so I guess that’s progress,” Sheen said of his “Shame Shivers.” What has been interesting about making amends is that most people have been like, ‘Hey yeah, we’re good man, but we hope you’ve also forgiven yourself.'”
