Apple has introduced the latest versions of its 14-inch MacBook Pro and Vision Pro, both powered by the newly announced M5 chip. The new processor replaces the M2 in the Vision Pro and offers notable performance improvements over the previous M4 chip in the MacBook Pro.
M5 Chip Performance and Efficiency
The M5 chip features a 10-core CPU with four performance cores and six efficiency cores, alongside a redesigned 10-core GPU that now integrates a Neural Accelerator into each core. The M5 also includes a 16-core Neural Engine. According to Apple, this new chip delivers up to 3.5 times faster AI performance than the M4, and six times faster than the original M1. Multithreaded performance sees a 20% improvement, while memory bandwidth has increased by 30% to 153GB/s.
Apple’s latest 14-inch MacBook Pro keeps the same hardware as the previous M4 model, including the 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with a resolution of 1,964 x 3,024 pixels and a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate. The peak HDR brightness remains at 1,600 nits, and the device still features a 12MP Center Stage webcam.
MacBook Pro 14” Battery Life
The biggest change comes in battery life. With the M5 chip, Apple claims the new MacBook Pro can last up to 24 hours on a single charge, using the same 72.4Wh battery cell and a 70W USB-C power adapter included in the box. The laptop offers a MagSafe charging port, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, and a headphone jack. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
Apple offers the MacBook Pro 14” with the M5 chip in Space Black and Silver. The 16GB RAM and 512GB storage model starts at $1,599.
Vision Pro Upgrades
The updated Apple[1] Vision Pro now features the M5 chip, which enables it to render 10% more pixels on its micro-OLED displays. The refresh rate increases to 120Hz, compared to 100Hz in the original model. Apple claims up to 50% faster AI performance for first-party apps and double the speed for third-party applications.
Battery endurance is improved, with the device lasting up to 2.5 hours in general use and 3 hours during video playback. However, the M5 Vision Pro is heavier than its predecessor, weighing between 750 and 800 grams depending on the chosen Light Seal and headband. For comparison, the M2 Vision Pro weighed between 600 and 650 grams.
Apple has introduced a new Dual Knit Band for the Vision Pro, which uses 3D knitting technology and features upper and lower straps. The band, priced at $99, is also compatible with the original M2 Vision Pro.
The M5 Vision Pro keeps the same starting price as before: $3,499 in the US for the 256GB version.
