The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, has congratulated Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team, the Super Eagles, following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Benin Republic in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Tuesday.

Striker Victor Osimhen scored a sensational hat-trick, while substitute Frank Onyeka added a fourth goal in stoppage time, securing a dominant win for Nigeria in their final group game. The victory ensured that the Super Eagles finished second behind South Africa to book a spot in the playoffs.

Speaking on behalf of the Governor, the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, described the team’s performance as “spectacular” and commended the players for igniting the resilient spirit of Nigerians.

“Our national team has made us proud with this resounding victory over Benin Republic. I’m not sure many people would have predicted this scoreline. Today’s match has truly encouraged and inspired us as a nation to keep believing and hoping for the best.

“This win has guaranteed our place in the playoffs, and we trust that the players will continue to give their all to ensure Nigeria qualifies for the 2026 World Cup.”

Governor Eno reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development, emphasising that Akwa Ibom State will continue to support, invest in, and maintain sporting facilities to meet international standards.

He also extended his appreciation to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Akwa Ibom State Football Association for their meticulous planning and execution of a smooth, incident-free match.

The Governor urged the Super Eagles to sustain their winning momentum as they head into the crucial playoff stage.
