Microsoft has officially launched MAI-Image-1, its first-ever AI image generator built entirely in-house a major move marking the company’s shift from reliance on OpenAI technology. The new model is currently being tested on LMArena, where it has already ranked among the top 10 AI image generators based on user comparisons.
This innovation is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to strengthen its independent AI ecosystem, following earlier releases like MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-preview. The company plans to integrate MAI-Image-1 into Copilot and Bing Image Creator soon, enhancing their creative capabilities.
According to Microsoft, MAI-Image-1 excels in producing photorealistic visuals with more accurate lighting, reflections, and textures, while maintaining speed and consistency.
“We designed this model with real-world artists and creators in mind to deliver more natural, diverse, and high-quality results,” said a Microsoft spokesperson.
The model was trained on a curated and ethically sourced dataset, with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and responsible AI use. This release reflects Microsoft’s growing independence in AI development and its long-term goal of building an internal foundation for future innovations.
