The Botanical Garden of the Ozarks[1] in Fayetteville announced Tuesday (Oct. 14) that it has received $220,000 from Nancy (née Totemeier) and William D. Koch. The gift will fund construction of a new greenhouse and renovation of the Carl A. Totemeier Horticulture & Event Center.
Project design is underway, and groundbreaking for the new greenhouse is set for Nov. 11. Both projects are expected to be completed in 2026.
“The Koch family’s gift represents both a continuation of the Totemeier legacy and an investment in the garden’s future,” said Ashley Wardlow, executive director of the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. “Their support allows us to strengthen our horticultural capacity while also improving one of our most visible and frequently used public spaces.”
The new greenhouse will double the garden’s growing capacity. It will be built adjacent to the garden’s existing 3,000-square-foot facility, which supports the propagation and seasonal refresh of plants throughout the 12 themed gardens. It accommodates approximately 8,500 to 9,000 pots at a time, which is short of the more than 14,000 plants typically needed for seasonal changeovers.
“The new facility will mirror the footprint of the original structure and feature improved flooring, ventilation, accessibility and electrical systems,” according to a news release. “It will not only increase production capacity but also create new opportunities for education and volunteer engagement, allowing guests to see the science and care behind maintaining the garden’s plant collections.”
The renovation of the Carl A. Totemeier Horticulture & Event Center will include new exterior siding, restored entry doors, restroom stalls, and updated flooring in the second-floor offices, as well as new desks and seating. The updates are expected to improve accessibility, comfort, and appearance for visitors and staff.
“For me, this gift is about what the garden represents today and what it will mean for future generations,” William D. Koch said. “It’s a place that inspires learning, beauty, and connection for everyone who visits. I’m proud that Nancy and I can play a role in shaping the experience guests of BGO will enjoy for years to come.”
The center, which welcomes more than 100,000 guests annually, opened almost two decades ago and hosts educational programs, community events, weddings, and private celebrations that generate operating revenue and advance the garden’s mission.
“My parents, Jean and Carl Totemeier, devoted so much love and vision to the garden in its early years, and it means a great deal to me to continue that legacy,” Nancy (née Totemeier) Koch said. “Supporting the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks is a way to honor their work and ensure this special place continues to grow.”
Fayetteville Mayor Molly Rawn provided the following statement on the project and gift.
“The Botanical Garden of the Ozarks is a vital asset to Fayetteville – a destination that brings thousands of visitors to our city each year and a partner in education and environmental stewardship. For years, the city and the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks have worked together to enhance Fayetteville’s quality of life and strengthen our local economy. We’re grateful for the Koch family’s generosity, which will help the garden continue to grow Fayetteville’s reputation as a place where nature and community thrive.”
Botanical Garden of the Ozarks is a member-supported nonprofit located on 44 acres on the east side of Lake Fayetteville. It has 12 display gardens and the state’s only butterfly house.
