Investigators say suspect in workers’ compensation fraud case illegally entered the U.S. twice.

A man arrested in connection to an insurance fraud case in Miami-Dade County also turns out to be a migrant who was in the United States illegally.

Florida Chief Financial Officer[1] Blaise Ingoglia and the Department of Financial Services Criminal Investigations Division[2] announced the arrest of Jose Arias-Reyes on charges of insurance fraud Friday. It turns out Arias-Reyes had two prior removals from American and illegally came back into the country twice, according to Ingoglia.

“Jose Arias-Reyes had no legal right to be in this country, and his arrest is a victory for hard-working Floridians who voted for President Donald Trump’s directive to remove illegal aliens from our communities,” Ingoglia said in a news release. “Florida does not tolerate illegal immigration, nor do we tolerate criminals who take advantage of the system. We will continue working with our statewide law enforcement partners to hold these offenders accountable and fight back against illegal immigration.”

Arias-Reyes was arrested following a joint investigation that also involved the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations[3]. He was the president of a company called AR Carpentry Services Inc. Investigators say Arias-Reyes withheld true payroll amounts he was providing to his employees to avoid a higher workers’ compensation insurance premium.

He’s also accused of fraudulently reporting payroll exposure to his workers’ compensation insurance company. The difference in payments in premiums was huge, according to officials. Arias-Reyes paid about $5,065 in premiums. Investigators say there should have been some $388,693 in insurance premiums that he was avoiding.

In addition, Arias-Reyes has two previous criminal convictions. Those include a domestic assault charge and driving under the influence. He is facing prosecution for both state and federal law violations in the case.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office will be prosecuting the case against Arias-Reyes.

The Department of Financial Services encourages anyone with knowledge of insurance fraud to report it at FraudFreeFlorida.[4]
