The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) has issued a nationwide phishing alert, warning citizens against a sharp rise in fraudulent calls, text messages, and WhatsApp scams designed to steal personal and financial information.
According to NCERT, cybercriminals are using fake messages, including those offering rewards, lottery winnings, or banking alerts, to trick users into clicking on malicious links or sharing sensitive data. The agency urged citizens not to click on unknown links or respond to suspicious messages and phone calls.
The advisory emphasizes that no legitimate organization or bank representative ever asks for passwords, one-time passwords (OTPs), or CNIC details over the phone or via text. Users have been instructed to avoid logging in through unverified websites or links and to use only official government channels to protect their information.
NCERT also advised citizens to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on their mobile and email accounts for enhanced security. In case of accidental clicks on any suspicious link, users are urged to immediately change their passwords and notify the relevant authorities.
The agency further appealed to the public to remain cautious, block fake numbers, and share the government’s awareness message: “Stay Safe from Phishing: Protect Your Personal Information.”
NCERT reiterated that phishing attacks are increasing nationwide, and that vigilance and awareness remain the best defense against such cyber threats.
