WhatsApp is preparing one of its most significant privacy updates yet: the ability to connect using usernames instead of phone numbers. Since its launch, the platform has always required a phone number for registration and identity. Now, it’s finally catching up with rivals like Telegram and Signal by introducing usernames.

In the latest Android beta version[1], users can already see a new option in the settings menu to reserve a username. This early access will allow users to claim their preferred names before the official rollout begins. WhatsApp aims to keep the process fair, preventing early adopters from grabbing popular usernames before others.

There are some simple rules for creating usernames. They can’t begin with “www,” must include at least one letter, and can only contain lowercase letters, numbers, periods, or underscores.

The update is expected to improve user privacy. Many people hesitate to share their phone numbers with new contacts, and usernames will provide a safer way to connect. This change could make WhatsApp more appealing for both casual users and businesses focused on secure communication.

While WhatsApp hasn’t confirmed an official release date, the feature is already under active development. A wider rollout is likely in the coming months as testing continues and the platform prepares for launch.
