Team Brazil ended a perfect weekend in Nigeria by winning the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, the first-ever electric boat race held in Africa. The team claimed their first victory in the all-electric E1 powerboat series on Sunday.
After securing pole position during Saturday’s qualifying, Team Brazil kept up their strong form in both the group races and the final. Timmy Hansen gave a top performance on the water, helping the team to finish first.
Team Brazil were the fastest in practice, won the qualifying race, and rounded off their weekend with a win in the final.
They finished ahead of Team Blue Rising – owned by Indian cricket star Virat Kohli – who came second. Team Drogba Global Africa, co-owned by Ivory Coast football legend Didier Drogba and Gabrielle Lemaire, took third place.
With the win, Team Brazil earned 38 points, taking their total to 89 points. They now sit in seventh place overall, ahead of the final race of the season in Miami next month.
“We came to Lagos and had an amazing time,” Hansen said after the race. “Getting the best starting lane was key, and thanks to the team, I had a great start and everything went smoothly.”
There was no podium place for Team Rafa and Team Brady, who were battling for the top spot in the championship before the Lagos race.
Despite finishing fourth in Lagos, Team Brady stayed top of the standings with 154 points after picking up 19 points over the weekend.
Team Rafa, owned by tennis legend Rafael Nadal, are still close behind with 151 points after finishing fifth in Lagos. The team’s drivers, Cris Lazarraga and Tom Chiappe, earned 17 points in the race.
Team Blue Rising remain third overall with 145 points.
The E1 Series is the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing championship, which started last year in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Lagos made history as the first African city to host an E1 race.
The E1 Lagos GP was the second-to-last race of the season, setting the stage for a thrilling title decider in Miami.
Speaking during the event on Sunday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the championship, calling it a step forward in innovation and sustainability.
“Hosting the E1 Series is more than just a sporting event – it’s about promoting clean energy, innovation, and showing the world that Lagos is ready for the future,” he said.
