The CM of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has taken one more step towards greener public transit. On October 3, 2025, she inaugurated Phase II of the Lahore Electric Bus Project. The new phase launched 40 additional electric buses and extended service over two new routes:

  • Raiwind to Jinnah Terminal (Thokar Niaz Baig)
  • Jinnah Terminal (Thokar Niaz Baig) to Harbanspura

The goal is to have 70 new buses by December, pushing the total fleet in the Lahore Division to 500. Plans are also underway to expand the service to Nankana Sahib, Kasur, and Sheikhupura.

Fare is kept low at Rs. 20. Students, senior citizens, and people with disabilities ride free. The buses are equipped with Wi-Fi, CCTV, mobile charging ports, and wheelchair ramps. These features raise the bar for modern public transport in the city.

Passenger demand in the already running cities (Mianwali, Wazirabad, Sargodha, and Sahiwal) has surged beyond expectations. The increase reinforces confidence in the expansion efforts.

Context

The electric bus initiative began earlier with Phase I[1], which introduced the first fleet of electric buses in Lahore. The goal was to reduce emissions and offer affordable, sustainable transit options. Over time, the service proved to be popular and reliable, setting the stage for further rollout. Each phase has focused on adding more buses, extending routes, and improving passenger amenities while maintaining low fares. The current Phase II represents a significant leap toward scaling the system across the broader region by adding 40 new electric buses to the fleet.
