Microsoft has officially started releasing the 2025 update for Windows 11, known as version 25H2. This is the annual feature update, arriving in the second half of the year. A few years ago, Microsoft switched from two updates per year to one, making this rollout significant.
The update is delivered through servicing technology, the same system used for regular monthly patches. Initially, it is available only for devices running Windows 11 version 24H2. Users must also enable the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option to receive it first.
Microsoft is taking a careful approach this time. If the company detects issues like incompatible apps or drivers, a safeguard hold will stop the update until the problems are resolved. This method is designed to avoid the reliability concerns seen in earlier rollouts.
The company says the update will gradually reach more devices over the coming months. Microsoft describes version 25H2 as bringing new features, security improvements, and more user control, though it has not detailed all the additions yet.
While the update has begun rolling out, most Windows 11 users may need to wait weeks or even months before it appears on their systems.
