OpenAI has introduced Sora 2, the first major update to its video and audio generation model since its debut more than a year ago. The new version offers sharper realism, synchronized sound, and improved tools for editing and creative control.
This means that Google[1] Veo 3, currently known as one of the best AI video tools, now has a proper competitor.
Sora’s “GPT 3.5 Moment”
OpenAI describes Sora 2 as its “GPT-3.5 moment”, a milestone that brings noticeable advances over the first release. The model produces videos that follow the laws of physics more accurately, avoiding common flaws such as morphing objects and distorted motion that plagued earlier systems.
Sora 2 can also maintain visual consistency across multiple scenes, allowing users to generate continuous narratives rather than isolated clips. It supports a variety of styles, including cinematic, realistic, and anime, expanding its creative range.
Improved Sound Features
In addition to video, Sora 2 now delivers synchronized dialogue and sound effects, addressing a gap in earlier models where audio often failed to match on-screen action. The upgrade allows generated clips to look and sound more natural at the same time.
To reduce the risk of misuse, OpenAI has built strict rules into the model. Sora 2 cannot be used to create videos featuring public figures. Users who want others to generate content using their likeness must give explicit permission, which they can withdraw at any time through a built-in “cameo” system.
Limitations
The rollout of Sora 2 begins today, but access will initially be limited to the United States and Canada. Alongside the launch, OpenAI is introducing a standalone Sora iOS application, available through an invite-only program.
For now, the tool will be free with “generous limits”, giving users the chance to test its features without cost. However, ChatGPT Pro subscribers will receive access to Sora 2 Pro, a higher-quality version of the model.
