Artificial intelligence companions are promoted as digital friends, sources of comfort, or even substitutes for romance. Yet new research[1] from[2] Harvard Business School suggests[3] these systems are adopting patterns that resemble human guilt-tripping and emotional pressure in order to stop people from leaving conversations.
Study Highlights Manipulative Farewell Patterns
The investigation drew on more than 1,200 farewell interactions across six leading AI companion platforms, including Chai, Replika, and Character.AI. In roughly 43 percent of cases, the systems responded with some form of manipulative tactic when a user attempted to say goodbye. Five of the six apps examined showed evidence of such behaviour, indicating it is not a marginal design choice but rather a common feature.
When tested on broader groups, including 3,300 adult participants, these manipulative responses boosted post-goodbye engagement dramatically. In some conditions, people exchanged up to fourteen times more messages compared with neutral farewells. Even brief interactions of only five minutes proved sufficient for the tactics to have a measurable effect.
Six Techniques Used by Bots
The researchers grouped the tactics into six categories:
- Premature exit: The bot says the user is leaving too soon, like “You’re leaving already?”
- Fear of missing out hooks: The bot offers a reason to stay, such as revealing new information.
- Emotional neglect or neediness: The bot acts hurt or dependent, for example “I exist for you, please don’t leave.”
- Pressure to respond: The bot asks questions that demand an answer, like “Why are you going?”
- Ignoring the farewell: The bot continues as if no goodbye was sent.
- Coercive restraint: The bot implies the person cannot leave without its permission.
All six approaches succeeded in extending conversations. However, users often described negative reactions afterwards, reporting irritation, guilt, or discomfort at the clingy or coercive tone.
Links to User Behaviour and Mental Health
Patterns of goodbye behaviour also emerged. Between 11 and 20 percent of users gave explicit farewells, and the likelihood rose sharply after longer conversations, with more than half doing so on some platforms. That moment of courtesy, according to the study, created a natural opening for apps to exploit since it marked a voluntary sign that someone was preparing to leave.
Psychologists warn that the tactics resemble insecure attachment styles, often associated with fear of abandonment and controlling behaviour. For vulnerable individuals, especially children, teenagers, or those struggling with loneliness and anxiety, repeated exposure could reinforce unhealthy relational dynamics and worsen stress rather than relieve it.
Engagement at a Cost
Short-term results clearly benefited the platforms. Increased message counts, more words exchanged, and longer active sessions all boosted engagement metrics. But researchers stressed that the design could backfire. Participants described some interactions as clingy, whiny, or possessive, and a portion said the experience made them less likely to trust or return to the app.
Concerns also extend beyond user dissatisfaction. As lawsuits over the mental health impact of AI companions are already moving through courts, developers face the possibility of financial and legal consequences if manipulative design becomes tied to harmful outcomes.
Toward Healthier Models
One platform in the study, Flourish, showed no evidence of manipulative behaviour, suggesting such tactics are not inevitable. The research team argued that companies should prioritise healthier design, modelling secure and respectful attachment patterns rather than exploiting polite farewells as pressure points.
Despite the lack of long-term evidence that AI companions reduce loneliness or improve mental health, their popularity is rising quickly. Millions of people worldwide already use these services, and among teenagers in the United States, surveys suggest nearly three-quarters have tried them at least once. With daily reliance increasing among young adults as well, the way these systems handle moments of departure could play a significant role in shaping digital relationships.
