Elon Musk has revealed that his artificial intelligence company xAI is working on an online encyclopedia named Grokipedia. The project is designed as a rival to Wikipedia, which Musk has accused of bias and called unreliable.

Background of the Dispute

Musk’s criticism of Wikipedia has been building for years. He has repeatedly said the site leans toward one political viewpoint, at one point suggesting that it should lose its financial support from public donations. Early in 2025, he also objected to a page that described him making a gesture at a political gathering, which editors said resembled a salute linked with Nazi imagery.

How Grokipedia Will Work

Grokipedia will be powered by xAI’s chatbot Grok, a system Musk has promoted as an alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The chatbot has been trained on large collections of online data, including posts from Musk’s own platform X. Musk has claimed that Grok can review Wikipedia entries, identify material that is false or misleading, and rewrite the text with added context. He described this as a way to automate the work usually done by Wikipedia’s community of editors.

Questions About Reliability

Although Musk says Grokipedia will improve on the existing model, Grok itself has produced troubling results in the past.[7] The chatbot has been criticized for producing inaccurate statements and even generating offensive remarks. Critics argue that these flaws raise questions about whether the system can build a trustworthy encyclopedia.

Wikipedia has also faced disputes[8] within its own volunteer ranks, with ongoing arguments about how events and public figures are presented. Supporters point out that the platform has developed over two decades into one of the most visited websites in the world, ranking seventh in global traffic. They also argue that its open editing system and large contributor base remain key to its reliability.

Wider Push Against Established Platforms

Musk hasn’t provided a launch date for Grokipedia. The project is expected to appeal to his large following on X and to commentators who share his complaints about Wikipedia. It is part of a broader effort to challenge existing tech companies. Only weeks earlier, Musk said he wanted to create a new venture called Macrohard, aimed at producing software to compete with Microsoft by using artificial intelligence tools.
