Apple is quietly testing a ChatGPT-style app on iPhones, according to internal sources familiar with the project. The app is designed to help engineers shape the next generation of Siri, powered by large language models.

Codenamed “Veritas,” meaning “truth,” the tool mirrors ChatGPT in functionality. It allows users to chat with Apple’s LLM while storing past conversations. However, the app is strictly for internal use. Apple[1] has no plans to release it publicly, as executives remain cautious about entering the crowded AI chatbot market.

Inside Apple’s AI division, Veritas is being used to trial advanced Siri features. Engineers are testing its ability to search across personal content, including emails, songs, photos, and videos. The app can also trigger in-app actions, such as photo editing, highlighting Apple’s focus on practical AI integration.

The smarter version of Siri was initially scheduled for launch this spring. Apple has since delayed the rollout, pushing the release to March next year. During this pause, Apple has opened discussions with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic to accelerate progress on Siri’s upgrade.

According to the source[2], beyond iPhones, Apple plans to extend its AI capabilities to other devices. Work is already underway to bring enhanced AI support to the HomePod speaker, Apple TV, and upcoming home devices.

This internal project signals Apple’s strategy to refine Siri before competing directly in the AI chatbot space. While rivals race to capture consumers, Apple appears focused on perfecting functionality first.
