The Punjab government has approved the hiring of 12,000 temporary school teachers to meet the growing demand for teaching staff in public schools across the province. With this move, the number of School Teacher Interns (STIs) will rise to 24,000, marking a major step to strengthen the education sector.

The shortage of teachers has long been a concern in Punjab’s government schools, and this initiative follows the model introduced last year. According to the provincial education minister, the contracts of previously recruited STIs will also be extended.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has formally approved the recruitment drive, while the Education Department is expected to release the official advertisement for applications soon.

Under the plan, newly appointed teachers will serve on a four-month contract, earning up to Rs. 45,000 per month. The scheme is being seen as a short-term solution to overcome staff shortages while providing opportunities for young graduates to gain teaching experience.

The Punjab government says this step will help stabilize the education system until permanent positions are filled, ensuring that students in public schools do not suffer from a lack of teachers.
