Expect specifics in the coming months.

When it comes to profligate spending in universities, Gov. Ron DeSantis[1] promises a fiscal reckoning.

“We’re DOGE’ing[2] the universities and we’re going to have a report on that. Probably, you know, sometime this Fall,” DeSantis said at the University of Florida[3].

The state equivalent to Elon Musk’s federal Department of Governmental Efficiency[4] is helmed by Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia and started its work[5] months ago.

The DOGE team mailed letters to university Presidents and Trustee Chairs last week to inform them of “site visits” to judge compliance with the executive order[6] that began the state effort.

DOGE promised to be “assessing your publicly available information over the coming weeks and months” and to “partner with the Board of Governors and Florida College System to request additional necessary information from each institution.”

That information included institutional budgets and subfunds, the “structure, staffing, budgets, and functions of administrative offices and administrator roles,” plus “facility usage reports; course codes, descriptions, and syllabi; Full detail of all centers established on campus” and the “closure and dissolution of DEI programs and activities, as required by law.”

DeSantis told the Board of Governors[7] that DOGE would probe some familiar topics, including diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives that theoretically have been ferreted out, courses deemed to be too ideological, and administrative bloat.
