Details might still be sparse, but 9-1-1 season 9[1] is about to give fans the most ridiculous storyline of all time – Athena (Angela Bassett) and Hen (Aisha Rind) are going to be sent up to space. I’m not joking.
This comes thanks to the new trailer, which you can catch up with below. “Over the past eight seasons, 9-1-1 has faced almost every emergency on earth,” the voiceover tells us. “This fall, they will go where no first responders have gone before.”
Cue Athena buckling up to be shot into the atmosphere, and that’s all the context we’ve got for the dramatic shift in storyline. If you’re still reeling over the season 8 finale, you’ll know we were left with the station crew in tatters after the death of Athena’s husband, Bobby (Peter Krause).
So how on earth did the Hulu[2] and Disney+[3] show get from a heartbreaking funeral to space in the blink of an eye? Frankly, I don’t even need to wait for an actual explanation to know season 10 is less likely than ever, and Bassett’s time on the show has already likely ended.
9-1-1 season 9 already wins the award for worst TV storyline of 2025, and it’s not even out yet
Remember when Riverdale started out as a harmless teen drama, then by the time it reached season 7, it had covered everything from time travel to babies being thrown into a fire? Well, I fear that’s exactly the path 9-1-1 is heading down.
In fact, the show tells us that itself in the trailer. “Over the past eight seasons, 9-1-1 has faced almost every emergency on earth,” roughly translates to, “We’ve run out of ideas, but we’ve been renewed for another season, so we’ve got to show you something.”
Obviously, in no way should this have meant randomly sending a cop and a paramedic into outer space. I suspect a lot of people will binge season 9 just to see the inevitable fallout[5] (we do love to hate-watch, after all), but there are two clear reasons why 9-1-1 season 9 has set itself up to fail.
First, the space plot is the absolute worst way to honor Bobby’s legacy, even if the storyline does end up having some credibility. We all watched him die in a freak virus accident wearing something akin to an astronaut suit, and this new image is almost triggering. Bobby’s time as leader wasn’t about gimmicks either – he was a man about community, service, and getting the best job possible done.
Then there’s Athena’s journey. Surely she’s still grieving his loss, and I can’t imagine going to space is the best kind of coping mechanism. I can picture Bassett at the season 9 table read, head in hands, wondering how she’s got herself stuck in this situation.
Obviously, among all this, there’s the resounding question: why? Why are we doing this? Why is this happening? Why would we bother watching?
If 9-1-1 season 9 goes as badly as I think it will, surely it’s curtains for Bassett’s involvement. Once she goes, the show really will begin its downward spiral into a total mess, making a potential season 10 completely unwatchable… if it even happens.
