Florida’s Governor[1] says leading Democrats are scapegoating Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE[2]) in the wake of what is being called a “targeted attack[3]” on the agency’s Dallas headquarters.

During an appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime[4],” Gov. Ron DeSantis[5] said California Gov. Gavin Newsom[6] and others enabled those who seek to terrorize federal agents through irresponsible commentary.

“What his rhetoric is doing, what his actions, what other supposedly mainstream politicians and the Democratic Party have done, is to put a target on the back of our ICE agents, because they’re demonizing them,” DeSantis said.

“They’re comparing them to things like the Gestapo, and so that ends up creating an environment where people like this are going to act.”

Conservatives are criticizing Newsom for signing the “No Secret Police Act[7],” which bans federal immigration enforcement officials from wearing masks to hide their identities. The law also says these officials can’t go into emergency rooms or on school campuses to detain individuals.

DeSantis said Newsom is “the same Governor who forced 2-year-olds to wear masks during COVID” when “he wielded executive power to muzzle people.”

“I think he thinks that he just has ultimate power to do this,” DeSantis speculated.

He went on to argue that “this is a way to try to scare ICE agents from doing their job, and I think even tragically, where these ICE agents are going to face the brunt of these crazy people.” He also said Newsom had never comforted an “angel mom” during the segment.

DeSantis and Newsom have used each other as foils[8] for years.

When DeSantis was running for President, he held a debate with Newsom on Fox News. He’s said he’s interested in debating Newsom again, but that’s unlikely to happen.

A national Emerson College[9] survey suggests that Newsom may not benefit from the free publicity he’d get from a second showdown[10] with DeSantis.

“Honestly, I kind of forgot Ron DeSantis is still Governor,” Newsom said last month[11], denoting “sub-zero interest” in debating “Sean Hannity and Ron DeSantis” again.
