Golf fans roasted the American Ryder Cup[1] team for a fashion faux pas during their gala dinner.
The members of Team USA[2] and Team Europe arrived to Hempstead House – a castle-like manor in the town of Sands Point on Long Island’s North Shore.
As the golfers and their better halves turned up, the European team arrived in tailored suits, striped shirts, ties, and black dress shoes.
The Americans, on the other hand, also arrived in suits. They also all wore white dress shirts without any ties and the top buttons open.
But the biggest misstep, in the eyes of some, was their choice to wear white leather sneakers.
Fans bemoaned the design choice – especially as their casual appearance clashed with not only the classy outfits of their rivals, but also the fashionable dresses of their partners.

The US Ryder Cup team members got criticized for their lack of formal wear for their gala

Meanwhile, Team Europe wore suits and ties as well as black dress shoes to the event
‘Europe is going to win. Business trip for them. America in tennis shoes? Who wears tennis shoes to a castle?’ wrote one fan on X.
Another said, ‘Why are the Americans wearing sneakers, [come on] have class.’
‘I have a problem with the US team dressing like it’s at a frat party with no tie and sneakers. What a bunch of idiots and in my opinion, disrespectful to the history and event,’ another wrote.
‘WAGs dressed to the nines and the guys are in open collars and sneakers? Whose idea was that?’ wondered one fan.
Another posted, ‘Nice looking group of people…but if you’re going to put on a suit, don’t wear sneakers!!!…Respect for the visiting team!!!’
Of the twelve golfers who arrived to the event for Team USA, only two were unaccompanied: Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau.
Schauffele’s father, Stefan, has previously talked about his family’s decision to boycott the Ryder Cup[3] due to the ‘disgusting’ behavior of American fans in the past. It’s possible that Xander’s wife, Maya, joined them.
As for DeChambeau, he’s rumored to be dating a recent college graduate, Lilia Schneider, but nothing appears official.
The Americans will hope to continue their winning streak at home and take back the trophy after their embarrassing showing at Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome in 2023.
The Ryder Cup tees off from Bethpage Black on Friday.
