Google is moving Gemini beyond the browser, bringing its AI assistant to Google TV after recently dropping the Chrome membership fee and introducing new features[1]. The company has confirmed that its AI assistant is now coming to Google TV.

The first stop is TCL’s QM9K series, which officially hits shelves today after being announced earlier this month. Gemini will expand beyond TCL in the months ahead, reaching other TVs and streaming devices running Google TV. That includes the Google TV Streamer 4K, Walmart’s Onn 4K Pro, and several 2025 models from Hisense and TCL.

Smarter TV Conversations

At its core, Gemini can still do the basics you’d expect from Google Assistant, like starting a show or pulling up an app. But it also brings more conversational smarts. Instead of searching by title, viewers can describe a scene, ask for a recap of missed episodes, or look up content with vague prompts.

In a blog, Google says[2] Gemini can now recommend shows in more personal ways. Families can ask for suggestions based on everyone’s preferences or check what’s trending. Beyond TV, the assistant can also handle broader questions like “Why do volcanoes erupt?” or “What dessert can I make in under an hour?” with answers shown on-screen, read aloud, and paired with YouTube video links.

The rollout comes as competition heats up. At CES 2025, Samsung and LG revealed plans to bring Microsoft’s Copilot to their latest smart TVs. With Gemini built into Google TV, the battle for control of the living room is quickly intensifying.
