Nigeria’s Flying Eagles began their World Cup preparations with a 1-1 draw against Chile in Rancagua on Saturday night.

Aliyu Zubairu’s team made a strong start and took the lead after 18 minutes. Tahir Maigana delivered a fine corner, and Ahmed Akinyele rose highest to head home. Daniel Bameyi stood firm in defence, while Charles Agada and Ayuma Israel carried the attack.

Chile equalised in the 36th minute after a defensive mistake allowed Felipe Faúndez to score. The goal lifted the hosts, who pressed hard and forced goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt into two key saves early in the second half.

In the second period, Nigeria brought on Abduljelil Kamaldeen, Kparobo Arhieri and Auwal Ibrahim. The changes added energy but neither side could find a winner, with midfield battles cancelling out clear chances.

Despite the draw, the Flying Eagles showed positives in their pressing and organisation, as well as resilience after conceding. However, defensive lapses remain a concern as the World Cup approaches.

Nigeria will face Australia next on Tuesday in their final friendly before the FIFA U20 World Cup kicks off. Zubairu will be looking for sharper finishing and greater ruthlessness from his players in their last test.
