The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication is preparing for a crucial session on September 19, 2025. The agenda includes the Ufone–Telenor merger, spectrum auction planning, alleged telecom data breaches, and Jazz’s reported Rs6.58 billion overcharging case.
According to the Senate Secretariat, regulators and telecom operators will face detailed questioning during the meeting. Lawmakers want answers on market consolidation, spectrum pricing, and consumer protection.
The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) Chairman will brief senators on the Ufone–Telenor merger ahead of the spectrum auction. Lawmakers will also examine the last audit of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL). Details of Ufone’s Board of Directors, including their designations, meeting frequency, and per-meeting charges, will also be reviewed.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman is expected to address growing concerns over a reported telecom sector data breach. The issue has triggered alarm about privacy risks and the handling of sensitive consumer information.
At the same time, the PTA and the Auditor General of Pakistan will provide clarity on the controversial audit report. That report alleged Jazz overcharged mobile customers by Rs6.58 billion, raising questions about billing transparency.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) will also present a list of all Boards of Directors under its jurisdiction.
With telecom mergers, spectrum pricing, and data security at stake, the Senate committee session is likely to spark tough exchanges. Industry leaders and regulators will be pressed to defend their practices as lawmakers push for greater accountability.
