Spotify introduced lossless audio only a few days ago, ending years of anticipation among its users. Today, the streaming giant has revealed another major update, this time focused on its free plan.

Free users can now play any song they want. Tracks can be selected directly through search or picked from a playlist. This is a significant shift, as the free tier previously forced listeners into shuffled playlists instead of giving them direct access. That limitation was designed to push more people toward Spotify Premium.

According to the source[1], the company has not explained why it decided to change its strategy now. However, industry watchers suggest Spotify may feel confident enough in its paying subscriber base to loosen restrictions.

Despite this upgrade, the free plan is still far from Premium. Ads continue to interrupt playback, skip limits remain in place, and stream quality is capped at lower levels. Even so, the ability to choose songs freely marks the biggest improvement to the free tier in years.

Spotify’s recent moves suggest a stronger focus on user satisfaction while maintaining incentives to upgrade. For free users, though, this change alone makes the listening experience far more flexible and enjoyable.
