Qualcomm has confirmed the official name of its next flagship chipset, and it won’t follow last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite branding. The upcoming processor will launch as the Snapdragon 8 Elite 5, skipping four numbers in the process.
The decision is not random. Qualcomm is returning to its original Snapdragon 8 series naming format. That system began in 2021 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, followed by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in 2022.
The company later released the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and then last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, which would have been called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
By naming the new chip Snapdragon 8 Elite 5, Qualcomm signals continuity. The company describes it as “an evolution of its established framework” rather than a complete overhaul.
The Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii, will host the official unveiling on September 23.
Early details suggest major performance gains. The Snapdragon 8 Elite 5 will feature custom Oryon CPU cores, with a prime core clocking at 4.6 GHz. The “for Galaxy” or Extreme Edition model will reportedly reach 4.7 GHz.
Alongside this, Qualcomm is preparing a new GPU, rumored to hit 1.2 GHz. Benchmarks hint at record-breaking AnTuTu scores between 4.2 million and 4.4 million. Like its predecessor, the chip will be produced by TSMC, this time on the company’s advanced N3p 3 nm process.
