A new resolution has been tabled in the Punjab Assembly, urging a permanent ban on the popular social media app TikTok. The move was initiated by opposition lawmaker Farrukh Javed, who argued that the platform is spreading vulgarity and harming the country’s youth.
TikTok has faced repeated criticism in Pakistan over content deemed immoral or against local cultural values. The app has previously been banned multiple times, with authorities citing similar concerns about obscenity, but each ban was later lifted after assurances from the company.
In this latest resolution, the lawmaker alleged that TikTok’s live chat feature is being misused, drawing children and teenagers toward inappropriate conversations and a “cheap fame culture.” The text also stressed that such trends undermine Islamic values and risk long-term damage to the moral fabric of society.
The resolution calls on the Punjab Assembly to press the federal government for decisive action, demanding a nationwide and permanent ban on TikTok to safeguard the younger generation. The matter will now be debated in the provincial assembly, where its future direction will be decided.
