Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has expressed anger at the refereeing during Trabzonspor’s 1-0 loss to Fenerbahçe on Sunday night.
Onuachu, who joined Trabzonspor from Southampton this summer, thought he had given his side the lead in the 11th minute when he rose above Milan Skriniar to head the ball into the net. But after a VAR check, referee Ozan Ergün ruled the goal out for a foul in the build-up.
The Nigerian striker, clearly unhappy with the decision, was booked for dissent. Speaking briefly after the match, the 31-year-old said: “It’s a shame for the Turkish league! They have to do better.”
Fenerbahçe went on to win the game after Youssef En-Nesyri scored just before half-time, leaving Trabzonspor frustrated and still trailing league leaders Galatasaray by five points.
Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan also criticised the officials, describing the decision as unacceptable. He said it was damaging the image of the Turkish Super Lig and even admitted the club considered leaving the pitch in protest. “We have a disallowed goal. It doesn’t make sense, it’s illogical,” Doğan told reporters in Turkey.
Trabzonspor will now turn their attention to their next league match at home against Gaziantep, where Onuachu will hope to make up for his disallowed goal.
