Serious salvo: A howitzer fires 155mm calibre ammo during tests

BAE Systems has struck a deal with Poland to boost production of heavy artillery shells – days after Russian drones entered the country’s airspace.

The defence giant will establish a 155mm artillery ammunition manufacturing plant in Poland to help bolster its defences.

The shells have been in short supply and Poland is leading a European push to rearm in the face of Russian aggression.

BAE boss Charles Woodburn said: ‘This is not only important for Poland’s own national defence but will also help to enhance its contribution to securing Nato’s eastern flank.’

Work on building the factory in Poland will start later this year and could be completed as early as 2027.
