Despite The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann calling it quits before work gets underway on season 3, he has confirmed he’ll still be involved at a “high level”.
So if you had any doubts that season 3 might deviate from the post-apocalyptic world that Naughty Dog created, it seems like The Last of Us season 3[1] will continue to stay loyal to the beloved games.
Druckmann confirming his continued involvement is excellent news for the show, and hopefully, this means its third chapter will remain in good hands.
Speaking to Variety[2], Druckmann said: “My hope for season three, and what I’d like to think I can best contribute to it, is to make sure it’s as deeply faithful as season one was.”
He added, “Because I feel like that is the gold standard for this kind of adaptation, while enjoying all these beautiful expansions that happen naturally with the rest of the team and how they’re working on season three. So that is where my involvement will stay is at that very, very high level.”
Clearing up some confusion about why he left as co-showrunner, Druckmann added, “It felt like I could better serve all of my responsibilities if I stayed at a higher level. It was quite challenging to be as involved as a co-showrunner on Season 1 and Season 2, while running a studio and working and directing and writing a game.”
What should we expect from The Last of Us season 3?
It’s no surprise that fans are keen to know more about one of the best HBO Max shows. The Last of Us season 2[3] has been nominated for 16 Emmy nominations (check out our weekend streaming guide[4] for more), and we’re all hoping that season 3 is just as celebrated.
The Last of Us season 3 is expected to focus on the “Seattle Day One” segment of the video game The Last of Us Part 2. Here, we focus on Abby’s story and the conflict between the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and the Seraphites, as seen from her perspective.
Based on this, we’re expecting to see some focus on Abby’s past, including her relationship with her father and her time within the WLF.
At the time of writing, we are still waiting on an official plot to be announced by HBO. So stay tuned!
