After a week of intense sporting action across 18 events, with athletes representing all 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State, the 2025 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival will draw to a colourful close on Saturday.
The State Governor and visioner of the festival, Pastor Umo Eno (PhD), is expected to attend the closing ceremony at the Uyo Township Stadium.
As of Friday evening, all events had been concluded except the football finals. Medals have already been presented to winners, many of whom expressed gratitude to the Governor and his administration for organising what they described as a successful festival that has revived passion for sports in the state.
The closing events will begin at midday on Saturday, 13 September 2025, with the final of the Male Senior Football competition between Etinan and Onna local government areas.
According to the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, a key highlight of the ceremony will be a reception in honour of Akwa Ibom athletes who won medals at the recently concluded 9th National Sports Festival. Akwa Ibom finished in seventh place among the 36 states and the FCT.
The festival, held under the theme “Nurturing Talent, Promoting Tourism”, will be officially declared closed by Governor Umo Eno. The announcement of overall champions and the presentation of trophies will round off what has been a memorable week of sports and celebration.
