The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has resolved a significant technical issue in its income tax return filing system affecting the salaried class. The bug, which required taxpayers to submit the “correct receipt value,” had been causing persistent error messages on the IRIS portal, preventing many from completing their filings despite repeated attempts by tax professionals.

The issue, which was also highlighted by the Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO), stemmed from a verification condition intended to improve data accuracy. However, it inadvertently created obstacles for taxpayers, delaying the filing process and creating widespread frustration.

With the bug now removed, salaried individuals can file their income tax returns more smoothly ahead of the September 30, 2025, deadline. The FBR emphasized that the correction ensures greater ease of compliance, reduces unnecessary errors, and enhances the overall efficiency of the online tax filing system. Tax experts have welcomed the move, noting that it will likely encourage more timely filings and improve the government’s tax collection process.

This resolution is part of FBR’s broader efforts to modernize its digital tax infrastructure, streamline compliance, and increase transparency, aligning with its long-term goals of boosting the tax-to-GDP ratio and facilitating a user-friendly filing experience for taxpayers.
