The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has distanced itself from a controversial statement that blamed two Super Eagles players for the team’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The statement, issued on Tuesday night by the Federation’s Communications Department, criticised captain William Troost-Ekong and striker Cyriel Dessers for their performances in the Group C match at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.
But NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, told journalist Omofoma Ebare in a telephone interview that the Federation never approved such a release.
“It was a painful result, but as a believer, I know that whatever happens is from God,” Sanusi said. “We are not happy and we apologise to Nigerians. But I saw that press release the same way everyone else did. The NFF did not authorise it.”
Sanusi stressed that responsibility must always be shared.
“We are proud of our players. Blaming individuals is not acceptable. When we win, it is a team effort, and when we lose, it is the same. No single player should be singled out.”
He praised both Troost-Ekong and Dessers for their contributions to Nigerian football, urging for more respect and unity.
“They have both played key roles for Nigeria. Troost-Ekong even helped us lift a trophy in England, and we celebrated him. We are not happy with them being targeted unfairly.”
Sanusi added that the Federation is investigating the source of the statement and will take action.
The draw has left Nigeria’s qualification hopes in serious doubt. With 11 points from eight matches, the Super Eagles now risk missing a second straight FIFA World Cup after also failing to reach the 2022 edition in Qatar.
