Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, marking one of the biggest design shifts in years. The new Pro series replaces titanium with a 7000-series aluminum unibody, introducing stronger durability, larger batteries, and advanced 48MP telephoto cameras, alongside Apple’s most powerful chip to date, the A19 Pro.
For years, Apple has experimented with different materials, moving from stainless steel to titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro, and now returning to aluminum in the iPhone 17 Pro[1] series. The company says this shift not only improves durability but also enables better thermal performance and lighter weight, without compromising premium aesthetics.
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max bring significant hardware upgrades. Both feature Super Retina XDR displays with up to 3,000 nits brightness, Ceramic Shield 2 glass, and ProMotion 120Hz refresh rates. The highlight, however, is the new 48MP telephoto Fusion camera with a 100mm f/2.8 lens, offering sharper zoom performance alongside wide and ultrawide 48MP shooters. Apple also improved the selfie experience with an 18MP square Center Stage camera that auto-adjusts for group selfies and videos.
On the performance side, the A19 Pro chip introduces a 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU with hardware Ray Tracing, and a 16-core Neural Engine to power Apple Intelligence features. A new vapor chamber cooling system boosts sustained performance by 40%. The devices also support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, and eSIM-only models in more countries.

Apple confirmed that pre-orders for the iPhone 17 Pro series will open on September 12, with shipping starting on September 19 in 63 markets, followed by 22 more regions on September 26.
Commenting on the launch, Apple said the new alloy offers “the best balance of strength, lightness, and thermal performance ever in a Pro iPhone.” With larger batteries, stronger cameras, and a future-ready A19 Pro chip, the iPhone 17 Pro series aims to set a new benchmark for flagship smartphones.
The big question now is whether this aluminum comeback, paired with Apple’s most advanced cameras and hardware yet, will push more users to upgrade in 2025.
