Jerusalem mass shooting leaves at least five dead and several wounded

At least five people are dead and several more wounded after a mass shooting incident in Jerusalem.

Initial reports from the emergency services in the Israeli^[1] city said 15 people were injured, six of them listed in serious condition.

It appears that a group of attackers stormed a bus as it approached the city on the Ramot Road Junction, firing into the passengers on board.

Paramedics and witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with shattered glass covering the streets where the wounded victims lay.

Police shot the gunmen dead after they carried out the attack at the holy city’s northern entrance.

Details about the attackers and thier motive are currently unclear. It’s also unknown how many attackers were involved.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the gunmen boarded the 62 bus line and started shooting at the passengers.

An elderly woman who was a victim of the attack told N12 she witnessed “gunfire like nothing I’ve ever experienced”.

“The bus was packed, and as soon as it pulled up to the stop, there was shooting,” she told the broadcaster.

She said she saw a “suspicious” man making a phone call before the group of attackers arrived.

She made her way to the other side of the road and “hid under another bus” while the shooting was taking place, she said.

The city is currently on lockdown, with all entry and exit points in and out of Jerusalem closed. Police are working to identify the gunmen.

A 30-year-old female gunshot victim is being treated at the nearby Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital, where she is in moderate condition and now conscious, reports the Jerusalem Post.

Another victim, a male in his 20s, is in moderate condition, while a man in his 40s is in critical and unstable condition. Both of the men are being treated at Hadassah Mount Scopus.

Nadav Taib, a paramedic with Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency service, told the paper: “We arrived at the scene in large numbers as soon as we heard the report of gunshot wounds.

“When we arrived, we saw people lying unconscious on the road, on the side of the road, and on the sidewalk near a bus stop.

“There was a lot of destruction, shattered glass on the floor, and a lot of commotion. We began providing medical treatment to the injured, and we are currently continuing to treat the injured and transport them to hospitals^[2].”

Another paramedic, Shlomi Levy, explained how they managed to save the lives of two women with “penetrating injuries” following the shooting.

Paramedic Fadi Dkaidek described it as a “very severe scene”.

“We arrived with large forces and immediately began triaging the wounded and providing medical treatment to several casualties with varying degrees of injuries, including severe and critical cases.

“The wounded were lying on the road and sidewalk near a bus station, some of them unconscious.

“We continue to evacuate the injured to hospitals quickly while providing life-saving medical care.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu^[3] is said to be meeting with his security officials following today’s attack.
